Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today told the parliament that the government will not tolerate any corruption and irregularities, and will continue to take action against corrupt persons, irrespective of their identities.

Delivering her closing speech in the budget and 8th session of the 11th parliament, the premier said, “Certainly, we will not tolerate irregularities. We are taking action no matter who s/he is. And our actions will continue.”

Hasina, also leader of the House, came up with the warning following several opposition lawmakers, including Jatiya Party Chairman and deputy leader of the opposition GM Quader, came down heavily on the government for its failure to control corruption in the health and financial sectors while speaking in parliament.

The PM, in her around one-hour long speech, said the military dictators polluted society by destroying moral values of people for long, to prolong their power after 1975.

“They taught people how to resort to corruption, earn black money and default loans, and overall, they polluted the society to sustain their power after grabbing it illegally.”

“After coming to power, Awami League government has been taking action against those engaged in corruption and irregularities, irrespective of their political affiliation.”

“In the past, corruption turned into policy and irregularities turned into rules. But after coming to power, Awami League government has been making an effort to correct these (irregularities) and this effort will continue,” Hasina said, amid a thumping of desks by the treasury bench lawmakers.
