Covid-19: Infection rate hovering above 20%, recovery rate almost 40%

Forty-three people have died from coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said today.

The death toll now stands at 1,545 and the death rate at 1.30 percent, Dr Nasima Sultana, additional director general (administration) of DGHS, said during a briefing.

Three thousand four hundred and twelve people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. With this, the current infection rate is 20.94 percent, and the total number of infections in the country stands at 1,19,198.

A total of 16,292 samples were tested in 65 labs across the country in the last 24 hours, Dr Nasima said.

Meanwhile, 880 Covid-19 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours. The total number of recoveries has reached 47,635 and the current recovery rate is 39.96 percent, the DGHS official added.

A total of 680 people were put under isolation in the last 24 hours, she added.

Among the deceased, 38 were male and five female, while 16 were from Dhaka, 15 from Chattogram, six from Rajshahi, two from Khulna, two from Mymensingh, one from Barishal and another was from Sylhet division.

Of them, one was between 11-20 years old, one between 31-40, six within 41-50, 18 within 51-60, 10 between 61-70, five from 71-80 and the other two were between 81-90 years old, Dr Nasima added.

During the briefing, Dr Nasima said that men are generally more prone to get affected by the virus, she explained, quoting sciencedirect.com.

She thanked the Bangladesh Scouts for distributing disinfectants and cleaning agents in a bid to prevent coronavirus from spreading, and mentioned that three new labs have started testing samples for the coronavirus recently — Sheikh Russel Gastro Liver Institute and Hospital, The DNA Lab Dhaka and Higher Scientific Research Centre of Dhaka University.
