‘In the past 24 hours, 14,031 samples were tested across the country and 3,240 of them found positive for COVID-19,’ Directorate General of Health Services additional director general Nasima Sultana said in the regular online bulletin.

Bangladesh confirmed the first COVID-19 cases on March 8 and the first death from the infection on March 18.

The country entered 16th week of infections on Sunday.

The ninth week, the number of detection was 4,980 with 29 deaths in the ninth week and 3,792 with 35 deaths in the eighth week.

Experts feared that the novel coronavirus infection and death might climb on in the coming days as the government on May 31 lifted restrictions on the public movement, resumed public transports services, businesses and offices.

Nasima said that among the 37 new deceased, 29 were males and eight were females.

Of them, 1 was in 11-20, 2 were in 21-30, 2 were in 31-40, 5 were in 41-50, 13 were in 51-60, 7 were in 61-70 and 6 were in 71-80 age-groups while the rest one was above 100.

On Saturday, 11,915 suspected patients were in isolation while 1,048 more patients were declared ‘recovered’ as they were not showing any symptoms of the infection now.

So far, 43,993 COVID-19 patients have been declared recovered based on the health services-prescribed ‘assessment’.

The guideline determines ‘recovery’ without any confirmatory tests of the patient that they have become coronavirus negative.
